NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- The aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) began its tailored ship's training availability (TSTA) in port at Naval Station Norfolk Sept. 17.

Afloat Training Group (ATG) Atlantic was aboard Truman during TSTA to train the crew as they completed training scenarios such as a mass casualty drill, various flight deck and hangar bay drills, multiple general quarters drills and a precision anchorage in preparation for the upcoming TSTA at sea and final evaluation period.

Cmdr. John Sipes, ATG Atlantic's training liaison officer, was on station to evaluate the state of Truman's training during the events.

"This was our opportunity to get hands on and stand side by side with Truman Sailors as they prepare for their next underway and the upcoming deployment," said Sipes. "ATG's goal is to make sure the basic level of training is met to maintain the survivability of the ship."

Sipes said Truman Sailors performed well during the training scenarios and praised the crew for high knowledge levels.

"TSTA was invaluable," said Senior Chief Operations Specialist (SW/AW) Jayson Westberg, training department's leading chief petty officer. "This was the perfect time for Sailors to receive dedicated training from ATG and our training teams. Being on board Truman during its pre-deployment work up phase is one of the best times to get this kind of experience."

Westberg and Sipes agree that in the event of an emergency, Sailors rely on their training to keep themselves and their shipmates safe.

"Everyone should be
properly trained to fight a fire or tend to a medical casualty," said Sipes. "Sailors will know how to react when events become hectic if they've been trained properly."

Sipes said it is important that Sailors understand the common Navy idiom, 'Train like you fight.'

"Pray for the best case scenario, but plan for the worst," said Sipes. "When a crew trains for the worst possible situations, they ensure their own success."
